Relations between the US and China show little sign of improvement, with Taiwan being a particular source of friction. Tensions escalated significantly last August, and as recently as April this year, China conducted three days of military drills around Taiwan after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with the US Speaker of the House in California. In addition, at the May 2023 G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, leaders overtly discussed tensions across the Taiwan Strait and their intent to counter ‘economic coercion’.
